Description

This workshop will explore the functional trajectories of recovery for children who experience neuropsychiatric conditions following moderate to severe traumatic brain injury. The discussion will be separated into three sections that each span portions of the rehabilitation continuum from acute to post-acute to community reintegration, although resolution of certain symptoms may not necessarily be linear. For each stage, signs and symptoms will be operationalized to better appreciate the art of selecting appropriate interventions to apply, how to potentially apply them, and when. Some medical interventions may be necessary in the treatment of neuropsychiatric conditions but may not necessarily be sufficient. Injury to an organ as comprehensive as the brain requires an interdisciplinary approach (e.g., behavioral, emotional, social) that considers the child in context of their systems (e.g., school system, family system, central nervous system). The workshop will close with evaluating macro-level environmental influences measured at the census-tract level, which have also been correlated with racial/ethnic health disparities, analyze them in context to neurodevelopment, and discuss a biopsychosocial ecological model of successful reintegration that emphasizes the central role of supportive caregiving figures. Objectives: At the end of this workshop, the learner will be able to: Identify similarities and differences in neuropsychiatric sequela between moderate and severe brain injury from mild. List components of community reintegration and assess the appropriateness of broad interventions. Evaluate the systems-level influences across community reintegration (post post-acute)
