Abstract:
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a chronic condition that affects millions of children and adolescents that often continues into adulthood. Symptoms include a combination of persistent problems, such as difficulty sustaining attention, hyperactivity, and impulsive behavior, and cause significant functional impairment. ADHD often co-occurs with other conditions that complicate the symptom presentation and treatment options. This presentation will review symptoms, diagnosis, and comorbid conditions of ADHD. We will critically review the available stimulant and non-stimulant medications along with their side effect profile. Alternative methods of treatment will also be analyzed with application to clinical practice. Audience participation is encouraged.
Objectives:
1. List the most effective medications in the treatment of ADHD
2. Name three side effects from stimulant medication
3. Analyze the efficacy of non-pharmacological therapies for ADHD
4. Apply treatment principles to clinical practice
