Infectious diseases in children and adolescents often represent a challenge for pediatric providers, both in the acute phase and during recovery and beyond. This workshop will review common infectious diseases seen in the pediatric population. Neurological sequelae will also be reviewed to provide the attendee with necessary information to inform neuropsychological evaluations of childhood infectious disease survivors. Finally, the neuropsychological sequelae will be discussed to apprise the pediatric neuropsychologist of the common deficits that may arise within the context of a history of an infectious disease.
Objectives:
As a result of attending this presentation, participants will:
Review the etiology and clinical course of neurologic infections in children.
Understand the neurological impact of infectious diseases on the developing brain.
Establish a link between known literature and neuropsychological and clinical findings and recommendations in the context of infectious diseases on the developing brain.
