The AAPdN is seeking Grand Rounds submissions for our upcoming Pre-Conference, April 23, 2026. We are spotlighting cases that demonstrate the impact of chronic illness and disease on cognitive, social, and emotional functioning on children and adolescents. We seek to deepen our understanding of the complex relationships between chronic health conditions affecting the central nervous system, such as leukemia, brain tumors, epilepsy, spina bifida, hydrocephalus, neurofibromatosis, meningitis and encephalitis, genetic and metabolic disorders, and their impact on neurodevelopment, cognitive performance, and social-emotional functioning.
Why This Matters:
Children and adolescents with chronic medical conditions face unique cognitive, emotional, and developmental challenges. Understanding their neuropsychological functioning is essential for:
Early identification of cognitive and emotional difficulties
Tailored interventions in educational and clinical settings
Supporting resilience and quality of life
Informing treatment and rehabilitation strategies
Topics of Interest include (but are not limited to):
Neuropsychological profiles of children with chronic illnesses (e.g., epilepsy, diabetes, cancer, autoimmune disorders)
Impact of medical treatments on cognitive development
School-based interventions and accommodations
Emotional and behavioral outcomes in chronically ill youth
Family and caregiver perspectives
Longitudinal studies and developmental trajectories
Cultural and socioeconomic considerations in neuropsychological care
Format:
This will be a virtual event, and presenters will have 30 minutes to discuss their case followed by an interactive Q & A with the audience.
Submission Guidelines:
Submissions should include a brief case summary and key discussion points that highlight the assessment, conceptualization and recommendations of pediatric chronic illnesses. Abstracts (300 words maximum) should follow the AAPdN Abstract Submission guidelines.
ABSTRACTS ARE DUE by February 15, 2026. Notifications will be sent by March 1, 2026.
We look forward to receiving your ideas and building an engaging, thought-provoking session for our 2026 Grand Rounds!
