Description

Level of Activity: Advanced Children and adolescents with frontal-subcortical (FSC) and cortico-cerebellar (CCC) circuit dysfunction experience executive control problems that often lead to psychopathology. However, moving beyond the generic "executive dysfunction" label, based on rating scale results alone, requires an understanding brain-behavior relationships in psychopathology and how the executive control problems experienced are manifested in the real world. In this workshop, advances in neuroimaging and neuropsychological assessment of child and adolescent psychopathology will be discussed. Using Circuit Balance Theory as our guide, workshop participants will develop skills in linking neuropsychological and behavioral assessment results to FSC and CCC dimensional functions to foster their differential diagnosis of child and adolescent neuropsychopathology, leading to targeted treatment strategies sensitive to individual differences and needs. Objectives: After attending this presentation, participants will be able to: 1. Explain how frontal-subcortical and cortico-cerebellar circuit functions govern control of learning and behavior; 2. Compare and contrast neuroimaging and neuropsychological functions among child and adolescent psychopathologies; 3. Detail how Circuit Balance Theory can be used to help understand how child and adolescent psychopathologies result from different dimensional circuit functions; 4. Identify different neuropsychological assessment measures associated with frontal-subcortical and cortico-cerebellar circuitry for more accurate differential diagnosis; and 5. Consider how neuropsychological data combined with behavioral data can be used to foster differential diagnosis, develop targeted interventions, and monitor treatment outcomes.
