Description
Level of Activity: Intermediate
Giving feedback to caregivers about a child’s assessment is both rewarding and challenging for pediatric neuropsychologists. Balancing clarity with compassion, expertise with empathy, and addressing cultural and emotional factors is complex—especially when results are unexpected or distressing. Many clinicians lack formal training in feedback delivery, unlike medical professionals with structured protocols. This session explores evidence-based strategies for navigating difficult feedback, including managing strong emotions, repairing rapport ruptures, and handling breaches in the "unspoken rules" of assessments. Case examples and practical tools will be shared.
Objectives:
Identify 3 conditions that make feedback sessions challenging.
Apply 3 research-backed techniques for delivering difficult feedback.
Adapt at least 1 technique to your practice.
