Description
Abstract:
Understanding central auditory processing disorders may be complex but it need not be complicated. This instructional course describes the neuroscientific foundations of “auditory processing” – often defined as “what we do with what we hear”, clarifying the continuum of skills that is encompassed by that term. Topics include development of processing skills, shared symptomatology across various sensory and neurocognitive disorders, assessment techniques for differential diagnosis of central auditory processing disorders from among other communicative and neurocognitive disorders, impact of processing disorders on academics, communication, and life skills, and differential intervention, including management strategies and treatment goals for improving auditory processing skills. especially among school-age listeners.
Level of Activity: Introductory
Objectives:
1. Describe continuum and development of auditory processing skills.
2. Describe various assessment techniques that probe skills along the processing continuum.
3. Describe behavioral characteristics of central auditory processing and related deficits.
4. Describe effective intervention strategies for use at home and school.
